Bio

Annette Jaret is a visual artist based in the Hudson Valley, New York. Primarily focusing on abstract and impressionist painting, Jaret considers her work to be part of the intuitive art genre. While Jaret was classically trained, she is now more focused on approaching her work with the gestural feeling of color, form and line. Through this process, she feels less restricted in her creative practice.

Studying under Anthony Trujillo at the age of 12, Jaret learned how to draw and paint traditionally. In her teen years, she took figure drawing classes at Parsons School of Design, then attending Pratt Institute, majoring in painting and minoring in jewelry making. After graduating, Jaret traveled to London for a year before returning to NYC and building a career as a costume jewelry designer. After having her first child, she resumed her art practice, moving from oil painting to watercolors and multimedia collage. Always interested in photography, Jaret honed her photoshop skills, and through this medium created another type of one dimensional collage.

For over a decade, she collaged leftover prints into a series of treescapes. When the pandemic hit, Jaret experienced a supply chain issue securing Asian papers, and this ultimately led her back to painting, her first love. Today, Jaret focuses on creating depth through layers of light and color in her work.

Jaret has been represented by HV Finds Gallery, Gallery @ Rhinebeck,  Riverwinds in Beacon, NY, Artisans of Lake Avenue in FL. She has exhibited with various art groups as NAWA, WAAM, BWAC, Arts society of Kingston and WITVA in Florida.

Artist Statement

I have lived many lives. As my life has changed so has my art. There is always a common thread with the use of color, layers, overlapping forms, the idea of peeping through. As I went from photo digital painting to collages to acrylic painting there is always the element of cutting, pasting and overlapping forms. My digital work is where I proceeded to manipulate on such platforms as photoshop, using multiple shots to create a scene. The collage group was influenced by moving to a rural area of New York and loving the poetry, symbolism and design of trees. My present journey utilizes acrylic paint as I jump between abstract works to veiled abstract landscapes. My trips to Florida marshes have inspired pieces reverting to my deep rooted affection of nature. As an intuitional painter I ask myself, how do I feel today then proceed in that direction.

Paintings

Landscapes and nature have always been my armature for many of my pieces. From street scenes to spirit dancing to the abstract landscapes of today. Shifting in and out of abstract paintings, now landscapes have resurfaced. Spending time in two beautiful areas one is the Hudson Valley lush with trees and mountains, the other Florida marshes. Here my brush is broad focusing on shapes, texture and color to depict a scene.

Digital Paintings

As I became more interested in technology I found I could use my camera, manipulate my photos and create my own worlds by collaging segments of photos.Though I took random shots my first digital show was called street signs. Using my phone I shot while in my car.

Spirit Dancing

Spirit Dancing grew from rejected prints which I began to cut and collage. This series ran for years and focused on trees. Towards the end of this series I began painting and cutting canvas. The follow through was full circle back to painting.
